Scent Families
Essential oils are generally grouped into categories. When thoughtfully combined, these scents create harmonious fragrances that uplift your mood and soothe your mind.
Floral
Soft, delicate, and often romantic, floral scents like Lavender evoke feelings of calm, comfort, and timeless elegance.
Mint
Cool, crisp, and invigorating, minty scents like Peppermint provide a refreshing burst of energy.
Citrus
Bright, zesty, and uplifting, citrus scents like Lemon, Sweet Orange, and Bergamot bring a sense of freshness and vitality.
Herbal
Fresh, green, and aromatic, herbal scents like Rosemary deliver a soothing and revitalizing touch with a hint of nature’s tranquility.
Medicinal
Clean, sharp, and clarifying, medicinal scents like Eucalyptus and Tea Tree are both refreshing and supportive for overall well-being.
Layer Your Notes
Think of your blend as a pyramid with three distinct layers:

These are light, uplifting oils that evaporate quickly and provide the initial impression of your blend.

Mixing Essential Oils Together
Start by creating a mixture with a total of a dozen or so drops of different essential oils in a small clean bowl. Keep a tally and tweak your recipe to find an aroma that is most pleasing to you. You can let your blend sit for several minutes or up to an hour and notice how the scent changes subtly as the different constituents evaporate at different rates.
Accuracy is key—count each drop carefully while blending. It is amazing how sometimes the addition of just a single extra drop of a particular oil changes the scent profile. That's the art of aromatherapy! Our essential oil bottles are equipped with caps that reduce the flow, ensuring only a drop comes out at a time for precise blending. The density of the oil can affect how quickly the oil can come out.  If you prefer more control or plan to make larger blends, you may want to invest in a glass dropper or disposable plastic transfer pipettes for easier handling.
Once you find just the right scent, you can use your formula to recreate it or to produce a larger sample. Store your new custom blend in a small amber glass bottle, they are ideal for protecting your oils from sunlight and reduce the chance of evaporation. Do not store essential oils in plastic containers.
Prefer Something Pre-Blended?
If you'd rather skip the blending step, we also offer thoughtfully formulated essential oil blends that are ready to dilute and use.
These blends are balanced for aroma and safety, making them a great option if you want something custom-feeling without experimenting from scratch.
Whether you mix your own or start with one of our blends, you’re in control of the final scent.
Step 3: Follow Safe Usage Guidelines (Very Important)
Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts. Pure essential oils can cause significant harm if applied directly to the skin or ingested. Before being applied topically, essential oils should always be diluted in a carrier oil or product base.
What is a Dermal Use Limit?
A dermal use limit is the maximum recommended percentage of an essential oil for topical application.
In our Essential Oil Guide, we provide the critical information you need to safely add your essential oils to your base:
- The maximum recommended percentage
- The equivalent number of drops per fluid ounce
These calculations are specific to each oil and based on our bottle dropper mechanism.*
Step 4: Blend & Enjoy
Add essential oils directly to your fragrance-free base and mix thoroughly.
When blending, remember: Go low. Go slow. You can always add more (until you reach the maximum dermal use limit)— you cannot take it out.
For lotions, we generally recommend starting between 0.5%–1% dilution, unless the oil’s dermal limit requires lower.
Allow your blend to rest for 24 hours to fully integrate before evaluating the scent. Then enjoy something uniquely yours.
AÂ Few Important Notes
Each essential oil has a different density. Because of this, oils will flow at different speeds from the dropper. Tip bottles slowly.
Our recommended maximum concentration limits are based on the best science available (Essential Oil Safety: A Guide for Health Care Professionals (Second Edition) by Robert Tisserand and Rodney Young).
Anyone can be sensitive or allergic to any substance — including essential oils.
If you notice irritation or any adverse reaction, discontinue use immediately.
If pregnant, nursing, managing medical conditions, or unsure about essential oil safety, consult your doctor, midwife, or other qualified healthcare professional before use.
