HOW DOES AROMATHERAPY WORK?
Plants and plant essences have been used for therapeutic and aromatic purposes for thousands of years. They are the basis of many medicines and fragrances. Different essential oils have different properties – some are analgesic, while others can be calmative, some anti-inflammatory, others immunostimulant.
According to “Essential Aromatherapy” by Susan and Valerie Ann Worwood:
“In aromatherapy there are two basic ways in which essential oils have an effect upon the human body through the nose and through the skin. Aromas are volatile, meaning they disperse in the air, float, and eventually reach the nose. These aromatic molecules float up the nostrils and come into contact with nerves extending from the olfactory bulbs, and ending in two small, sticky patches at the top of the nasal cavity. When the aroma molecule hits receptors in the nerve-rick patches, it sets off a reaction that results in brain activity…. Essential oil molecules also enter the trachea and lungs as we inhale…. Essential oils are also thought to enter the body through the skin because their molecules are extremely tiny. The surest evidence that essential oils get into the body is found in the scientific analysis of the means of excretion – perspiration, feces, urine, breath – after a certain amount of time has passed following the application of essential oils.“
WHAT ARE ESSENTIAL OILS?
Essential Oils are oils that are derived from botanicals or plants via steam distillation or cold press process.
ARE ESSENTIAL OILS INGESTIBLE?
Unless advised by a licensed practitioner, essential oils should not be taken internally as many oils contain compounds that are harmful when ingested; there is minimal scientific evidence of the beneficial effects of internal consumption of essential oils.
CAN I APPLY ESSENTIAL OILS DIRECTLY ON MY SKIN?
No, we do not recommend any essential oil be applied directly (a.k.a "neat") to the skin. They are powerful concentrated oils and are designed to be either diffused, diluted in carrier oils or be incorporated into our finished products. When diluting in a carrier oil, please follow dermal use recommendations.
WHAT IS A CARRIER OIL?
A carrier oil (or massage oil / body oil) is used to dilute essential oils before they are applied to the skin in massage and aromatherapy. They are so named because they "carry" the essential oil onto the skin. Diluting essential oils is a critical safety practice when using essential oils, as essential oils are powerful, concentrated volatile oils. Carrier oils alone do not contain a concentrated aroma, unlike essential oils, though some, such as olive, have a mild distinctive smell. Our Carrier Oil Blend is a wonderful way to apply your favorite essential oils to your skin, but works well as a fragrance-free massage oil as well.
WHAT DOES “DERMAL USE LIMIT” OR “MAXIMUM DERMAL DOSE” MEAN?
This is the maximum recommended percentage for topical use. Our dermal use limits are based on a maximum single day products application of 30ml (which is equivalent to 1 ounce.) While our recommended maximum concentration limits are based on the best science available, anyone can be sensitive or allergic to any substance, including essential oils. If you notice any irritation or other adverse reaction to topically applied essential oil and carrier oil blends, please discontinue use immediately. Patients who are using other topically applied medication should use separate areas of skin for essential oils and other medications.
